About registration to LOCATE
Hello there. My name is Warwick Gibson and recently I have been appointed as the British Honorary Consul in Fukuoka. As such, an important part of my job involves liaising with local authorities in the Kyushu area in times of emergency involving British nationals, such as an accident or natural disaster, and reporting on the situation to the British Consulate-General in Osaka. In the event that an emergency situation arises, it is essential that the Consulate-General possess up-to-date information on the British nationals living in the affected area so that they are able to contact you and let your family and friends know that you are safe, and provide any help that is needed. To this end, if you have not done so thus far, I would like to urge you to register the details of your residence and the number of people living with you at the Foreign Office’s new LOCATE online service. You can do this easily by visiting the Foreign Office’s website at www.fco.gov.uk and clicking on Locate.
When traveling abroad, the Locate system also enables you to register details of your destination so that British consular authorities in the country you are visiting can provide help in the case of an emergency.

Recruitment of volunteer wardens
Should an emergency situation such as a large earthquake or typhoon arise, it may be difficult for the Consulate-General in Osaka or myself in Fukuoka to obtain immediately an accurate picture of the situation on the ground. The Consulate-General is thus eager to create a network of volunteer wardens in each prefecture of Kyushu who could pass on information on conditions in their locality and on the safety of British nationals there in the case of an emergency. Just as importantly, wardens would be asked to encourage other British residents in their area to register on Locate. If you choose to volunteer as a warden, you would be providing a valuable service for other British nationals living in your locality so I ask you to consider becoming one of our network of wardens in Fukuoka prefecture. If you would like more information on volunteering as a warden, please contact the Consulate-General in Osaka on 06-6120-5600 or by e-mail at warden-network.osaka@fco.gov.uk.

Notarial services
Finally, here in Fukuoka, I am able to provide British nationals and Japanese nationals who require documentation for Britain, with a range of notarial services, including the certification of signatures and identity documents, such as your passport, birth certificate or marriage licence, the witnessing of a signature on a will and the drawing up of affidavits and statutory declarations. To benefit from these services, you will need to make an appointment to see me in advance. Unfortunately, I am unable to process visa or passport applications, which will continue to be done through VFS Global’s offices in Osaka and Tokyo. (www.vfs-uk-jp.com)
Should you wish to contact me here in Fukuoka with regard to any of the above, you can call me at 080-6437-1554 or e-mail me at warwick.gibson-honco@fconet.fco.gov.uk.
I look forward to meeting some of you in the future!
